Independent training provider Skills Training UK has opened its first Training Centre in Sheffield with the support of The Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield Sioned-Mair Richards. The Centre, based in The Electric Works on Concourse Way, is now open to deliver courses for adults and Traineeships for young people across South Yorkshire.
Skills Training UK is one of the training providers selected by South Yorkshire’s Mayoral Combined Authority to deliver local courses for adults in Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley, as part of the government’s Adult Education Budget (AEB). These accredited short courses are offered free to employed and unemployed adults aged 19+, to help improve their skills, find a career they love or progress in their current role. The courses cover a wide range of sectors, focussing on the needs of South Yorkshire’s local businesses and the industries that are predicted to grow in the coming years, such as digital skills, healthcare, warehousing as well as English and maths.
The new Training Centre will also deliver Traineeships for young people aged 16-24, offering vocational qualifications and work experience opportunities as a practical alternative to traditional sixth-form or college.
Transforming adult skills provision is part of the Mayoral Combined Authority’s Renewal Action Plan to help people improve their skills, get back to work or remain and progress in work. Supporting local people and backing businesses to grow is critical to South Yorkshire’s recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield Sioned-Mair Richards said: “I am delighted to officially open Skills Training UK’s new Sheffield Training Centre as a key step in supporting our residents to get good jobs and progress in their careers. Skills and adult education are critical in building a bigger and better economy for our region, giving people the opportunities they need to prosper and helping businesses to grow.
“Our wider skills strategy plans mean there will be 30,000 more people with higher levels skills by 2041. This is the power of devolution and we’re using it to meet the needs of South Yorkshire’s people and local businesses as we renew our region.”
