“She’s supportive and a great motivator. Her method of teaching is exceptional.”

In an ever-changing and often challenging educational landscape, it is crucial to celebrate and recognize the invaluable contributions made by providers in supporting and delivering education to their students. Access to Higher Education tutors plays a vital role in overcoming these challenges and ensuring that students continue to achieve their academic goals. The Awards serve as a platform to acknowledge and honour the outstanding achievements of these remarkable educators.

Gemma Smith, from Birmingham, is a passionate advocate for healthcare education. She began her studies in childcare and children’s education. However, she soon realised that health and social care was the sector for her. In 2016, while working full-time in the NHS, Gemma returned to university and obtained her BSc Hons in Health and Social Care. Subsequently, she became a qualified assessor and teacher. Joining Skills Training UK in 2021, she started teaching the Access to Higher Education programme in 2022. Gemma shared her excitement, saying:

“I take immense pleasure in supporting my students in attaining the qualifications and skills they need to achieve their goals and embark on their desired careers.”

“I am truly honoured to have been nominated by my learners.”

The Access to Higher Education Diploma focusses on the skills required for modern healthcare workers. Learners develop a good understanding of care principles, reflective practice and an introduction to how the healthcare system works. The 8-month course also consists of optional units including: nursing, midwifery, paramedic and radiography skills and provides entry to relevant degree courses and a programme of study, which is the equivalent to A Levels. Adults aged (19+), who have been living in England for at least 3 years are eligible to apply on the Skills Training UK website.

Gateway Qualifications, an esteemed awarding organisation dedicated to promoting excellence in education, commends Gemma Smith and all the finalists for their exceptional work and unwavering commitment to their students’ success. The Access to Higher Education Tutor of the Year Awards serve as a testament to their remarkable achievements.
