A training cohort of fourteen employees at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH) in Birmingham have won the Trust’s ‘Leading Lights’ staff award for Learner of the Year in recognition of their collective achievement in completing Level 3 Team Leader management training.
The employees received the recognition at the awards ceremony on 30th November 2021 held at the The Knowledge Hub, the home of education and research at the Trust.
Skills Training UK was engaged by the Trust in 2019 with the goal of encouraging personal development and career progression for supervisors and managers who had progressed into managerial roles without any formal training or guidance. It tailored a programme of Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeships training for the managers to give them the opportunity to gain a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification.
Claire Felkin, Training & Development Manager at ROH, says: “We wanted to map our own training programme to an external standard so that participants had the opportunity to gain a qualification and Skills Training UK helped us achieve this. They aligned our own training content with the modules which are required for the Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship Standard and the blended approach has worked very well.
“This cohort have really benefitted from the Team Leader Level 3 programme. The range of projects which they have worked on have demonstrated tangible results in the services delivered and they have benefited from the online resources and webinar options to support their learning remotely as we navigate through uncertain times.
“They have all been really positive and have felt supported by Skills Training UK throughout. Many of them achieved Distinction and Merit and we are really proud of what they have achieved both individually and as a peer group. It’s wonderful for them to collectively achieve the Leading Lights Award.”
One of the cohort to win the award was Carol Sleath, Team Leader for Large Joints, who said: “The training has given me a lot more confidence in managing the Personal Development Reviews for my team and arrange new or extra training to enhance their skills. It’s also helped me manage my workload and prioritise better. Each module was great and as a result I’ve been able to improve processes which have cut delays to patient care.
“Our Skills Training UK Trainer-Assessor Jayne was really good and gave extra support when I needed it. She always came back quickly to answer any questions or concerns and was always so positive and enthusiastic.”
The Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship training involved a workshop on a new topic every other month during which time participants built up a portfolio for the End Point Assessment.
Each learner also developed a project to work on which focused on delivering an improvement or strategic change during the course of the training programme.
1-2-1 support was provided throughout as well as access to Skills Training UK’s virtual learning portal with videos and CMI resources to support and reinforce learning.
A second cohort who started their Team Leader Level 3 during the pandemic are now nearing their End Point Assessments and a third cohort will start their training at the beginning of 2022.
