Success Story

New life for determined 16-year-old Noon

Inspirational Noon Abubakr, who moved from Sudan with her family to West London, has achieved vocational qualifications in a broad range of subjects, gained invaluable work experience, and is now well on her way to achieving her childhood dream of becoming a doctor.

“I’ve had such a great journey with Skills Training UK,” Noon said. “I was a bit scared when we moved – adapting to a new country, a new way of life – but I’m very proud of everything I’ve achieved.”

Due to the timing of the academic year, Noon was turned away from local schools and colleges and was asked to return nine months later in September.

“It was frustrating sitting around all day when I just wanted to get on with my education and life,” Noon said.

However, her mother arranged a meeting with the local authority and Noon, along with her two brothers, were referred to Skills Training UK’s Ealing Centre where they could all enrol straight away.

“I was really happy,” she said. “I couldn’t wait to get started, get more confidence, get my qualifications, and make new friends.”

Noon achieved a clean sweep of Level 2 qualifications, including English and maths, and she learnt new skills in customer service while on work experience at a mobile phone store. She also landed a full-time summer job at educational theme park KidZania in central London.

I would really like to thank my excellent tutors for their support and building my confidence and skills. Even when I had problems, I went to them for help. They also helped me with my work experience.

The crowning moment of her journey came when she was honoured with the Highest Achievement Award at Skills Training UK’s annual summer Celebration of Success event.

Tutor and award presenter Ben James praised Noon’s “incredible focus and attitude – all done with a smile and not one complaint”.

“It was the best moment ever,” Noon said. “I was so happy and very proud.”

The keen footballer and avid reader is now set to study towards GCSEs in English, chemistry, biology, and physics at Uxbridge College in September. She hopes to follow in the footsteps of her family and fulfil her childhood dream by becoming a doctor.

I’d like to recommend Skills Training UK to other people who are in a similar position to myself when I first came to the UK. This is a great opportunity for you – you’ll really benefit and achieve everything you want to achieve.
