Apprenticeship Standard
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Operators are responsible for performing inspections of materials, components or welds to verify their integrity under set conditions.
You will learn about product technology, engineering, inspection techniques and health and safety. The skills developed by an NDT Operator, whilst singularly focused on one NDT method, are transferable across all engineering sectors such as manufacturing, power generation, transport, oil and gas and defence.
This Apprenticeship is delivered in partnership with specialist NDT Training schools, including Lavender International, IMechE Argyll Ruane and the South West School of NDT.

For NDT Operator Level 2 the individual employer will decide whether an employee is suitable for the programme. There is a requirement to have good aided or unaided eyesight to satisfy the mandatory NDT eyesight test and have appropriate physical fitness.
Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment.
In the NDT Testing Sector, apprentices are required to achieve NDT Level 2 certification in one method in accordance with national and international standards.
To successfully complete the apprenticeship, the learner needs to pass an independent End Point Assessment which consists of three distinct assessment methods:
Assessment method | Area Assessed | Weighting |
Observational Interview (Professional discussion) | Knowledge | 40% |
Review of Portfolio evidence and achievements | Knowledge, skills and behaviours | |
Project showcase | Knowledge, skills and behaviours | 60% |
I never thought when I left school that I’d be doing physics and things like that. But it’s practical, on the job learning. I’d rather be getting hands on experience.
