Employer Story
Responding to a challenging and uncertain marketplace, a new senior management team at Precision Aerospace Component Engineering (PACE) wanted a new focus on efficiency and increased productivity.
They also recognised they had an aging workforce and a skills gap around lean manufacturing processes.
With expert trainers and years of relevant experience, Skills Training UK was the right partner to help them transform their approach.
Upskilling the workforce in the language and practices of Lean Manufacturing was central to the PACE team realising their vision for the company.
Together, Skills Training and PACE developed a bespoke training package of Improvement Techniques Apprenticeships for 25% of the company’s workforce
A combination of in-person classes and practical workplace learning focused on developing employees’ core skills to identify and implement improvement projects.
The strong and supportive working relationships formed between Skills Training UK and PACE Ltd helped to identify key individuals for future career progression within the company. As a result PACE moved four learners on to a higher, Level 3 programme and moved forward with their succession planning.
The level of skills growth achieved by Skills Training UK has assisted in promoting dramatic workplace process improvements, cultural changes, increased productivity and securing the long-term business future.
Ian Binns, Commercial Director, PACE
The impact of the training has been substantial. Savings from improvement projects are valued at £160,000 per annum, with a further £220,000 anticipated from on-going projects.
As well as significant financial benefits, the working environment and staff motivation has changed for the better, impacting the workforce and customers alike.
Productivity has never been higher, and efficiencies in all departments continues to grow.

Tamara Williams, HR Manager
Skills Training UK worked with us to introduce standardised cell working and create a production planning office. It’s simplified the organisation and now we are in the same space we can work together and communicate better.

The standardised work-stations, new visual management systems and new quality control means we are now producing and despatching products more efficiently. Our work spaces are more productive and we are experiencing the benefits of lean.
